THE RESTAURANT RESCUE PROJECT

Help us save Grub & Vine! Purchase a gift voucher or Virtual Dining experience for R1400, and receive a complimentary case of 6 Radford Dale wines (normal cellar door price R2385)

Matt Manning, Chef Patron at Grub & Vine

After being able to reopen our doors last week, we thought we’d seen a turning point for our little bistro.

We were wrong.

The announcement that there would now be a curfew of 9pm and the renewed ban on alcohol were a massive blow to an industry already on its last legs, and could very well be the final nail in the coffin for many of the restaurants and wineries we know and love.

We were feeling pretty despondent, until I got a call from my dear friend Alex Dale, the founder of Radford Dale Winery.

“I have an idea” is how he opened the conversation. At first I thought this was going to involve some cunning plan to defy the authorities; however, what he proposed was even better: a gesture so generous and heartfelt that I had to blame the onions I was not busy dicing for my rapidly reddening eyes.

Radford Dale, which was Platter’s Red Wine Producer of 2017, has generously donated some of their finest wines so that we can offer you an extra special deal, which will not only add value to your life (and your wine fridge), but help us keep the doors of our little bistro open.

Spend R1400 on either a Restaurant Rescue Grub & Vine gift voucher or Virtual Dining interactive, at-home fine dining experience for two people, and we will throw in a complimentary case of 6 Radford Dale’s most innovative wines (the cellar door price of each case is R2385), which you will be able to collect from our bistro as soon as alcohol sales resume.

We have implored you a number of times to support us over the past few months, and you have listened. We are so grateful and lucky to have such a wonderful base of customers.

We now ask you to please consider taking advantage of this fantastic offer where your R1400 purchase essentially gets you almost R4000’s worth of value, and which will enable us to ride out the worst of this storm so that we can continue to keep our lights on.

Alex Dale, Founder & MD at Radford Dale

Restaurants and gastronomy are part of the very fabric of Cape Town, and this world-class dynamism is dying a rapid death. The virus has drawn strong parallels with the hospitality industry: just as COVID-19 robs the afflicted of air, so government’s latest measures to curb it are depriving the sector of oxygen. We need to move quickly, collaboratively and with intention, if we are to see it survive.

And not only for the sake of our exalted culinary scene. The hospitality & tourism sectors have a long and vast supply chain, and employ thousands of people – many of whom are the sole breadwinners in their families. If restaurants close, our chefs, waiters, scullers, sommeliers and managers are left out in the cold, without any hope of finding employment for the foreseeable future.

As a law-abiding, tax-paying business, I am disheartened that there has been virtually no support from the public sector for our industry. Restaurants and wineries have always had a symbiotic partnership, and it makes far more sense at this juncture to redirect our taxable profits towards an industry which desperately needs our help, and which plays a pivotal role in our own long term survival.

Thankfully we still have export markets keeping us alive, so, for this reason, we have been able to commit half a million Rand’s worth of our wine to supporting the restaurant sector in Cape Town, in an effort to, in turn, help keep them alive through this pandemic.

I’d like to call on wineries as well as other businesses to do the same, and ‘adopt a restaurant’ as part of The Restaurant Rescue Project. Radford Dale is adopting Grub & Vine; if others can also do this, we can safeguard the entire eco-system and preserve the jobs and livelihoods of this sector cut adrift.

As a winery owner, I believe that in order for us to thrive in the future, the survival of the restaurant industry needs to be supported. Cape Town’s heart must keep beating.

How it Works

  1. Purchase a Grub & Vine Restaurant Rescue gift voucher (R1400) OR a Virtual Dining Restaurant Rescue package for two people (R1400) – make sure you select the option that states ‘Restaurant Rescue’!
  2. You will automatically qualify to receive a case of Radford Dale wine, which includes The Renaissance of Chenin Blanc (2018), The Antidote Gamay Noir (2018), Freedom Pinot Noir (2017), Nudity Syrah (2016), Black Rock (2017) and Grenache (2019). The normal cellar door price of each case is R2385.
  3. The gift voucher or Virtual Dining package can be purchased and utilised at a time of your choosing* – however, your wine can only be collected from Grub & Vine (103 Bree Street, Cape Town) once alcohol sales resume.
  4. Limited number of packages, so act fast!
